Rail Safety Week this September 22- 28"Operation Clear Track"

Dear Chief/Sheriff:

In recognition of Rail Safety Week this September 22- 28 across the U.S. and Canada, Amtrak and Operation Lifesaver would like to invite you to participate in the third annual "Operation Clear Track" public awareness campaign, aimed at promoting safety along the railroad tracks in your community.

"Operation Clear Track" remains the single largest railroad safety law enforcement initiative in the U.S. and now Canada, and will take place Tues., Sept. 24. The rain date will be the following day, Wed., Sept. 25. To participate, each department must devote a total of three-hours of law enforcement duty on either date during any portion of a work shift.

During the three-hour operation, we would ask that you assign your personnel to two railroad grade crossings of your choice for the purpose of enforcing your state’s grade crossing and trespassing laws.

Violators should receive a verbal or written warning or a citation when appropriate. We will provide a box of 500 railroad safety cards to your department for those assigned to the crossings to distribute to motorists and pedestrians. The cards offer tips on grade crossing safety and ways to avoid trespassing on railroad tracks. If you do not have railroad crossings in your jurisdiction, this safety detail can be performed at a train station or on a train platform.

Media coverage of the operation is welcomed and encouraged.

At the completion of "Operation Clear Track," your department will be asked to let us know the total number of verbal or written warnings that were issued, plus the number of citations that were written during the three-hour enforcement window.

We think you’ll agree that raising public awareness about the dangers of disobeying railroad safety laws is a critical first step in preventing railroad-related deaths and injuries. We hope you can join us to help reduce these numbers in your community.

To participate in the campaign, please copy and paste the following or hit ctrl and then click on the link to register your department https://operationlifesaver.wufoo.com/forms/operation-clear-track-2019-signup-form/. Once your department is registered, the safety cards will be delivered immediately.
